Jeanette's Guide to the Joys of Solo Travel
Hey there, wanderlusters! Jeanette from Live Local Travel Far here, ready to spill the tea on one of my absolute favorite ways to explore the world: solo travel!
Why I'm a Solo Travel Advocate
For me, solo travel isn't just a vacation; it's an adventure in self-discovery. There's something incredibly empowering about navigating new places on your own, making decisions based purely on your desires, and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone.
I often get asked, "Jeanette, isn't it lonely?" And my answer is always a resounding, "Not if you don't want it to be!" Solo travel opens doors to meeting new people that you might never encounter when traveling with companions. When you're alone, you're more approachable, more likely to strike up conversations, and more attuned to the energy of your surroundings.
One of my most memorable travel moments was in Rome. I was enjoying a gelato near the Trevi Fountain when I noticed a group struggling to take a photo. I offered to help, and we ended up chatting for hours, sharing travel stories and laughter. That chance encounter turned into a day of exploring hidden gems of Rome together, all thanks to the openness that solo travel encourages.
The Amazing Benefits of Traveling Solo
Still on the fence about venturing out on your own? Here are some compelling reasons to take the plunge:
Unleash Your Independence: Traveling solo forces you to rely on yourself, boosting your confidence and problem-solving skills.
Create Your Own Itinerary: No compromises! You get to do exactly what you want, when you want. Sleep in, change plans on a whim, linger longer at places you love – it's all up to you.
Embrace Spontaneity: Solo travel allows you to be more open to unexpected opportunities and experiences.
Meet Incredible People: As I mentioned before, traveling alone makes you more approachable and encourages you to connect with locals and fellow travelers.
Discover Yourself: Stepping outside of your familiar environment gives you the space to reflect, learn, and grow as a person.
Fun and Unique Ways to Travel Solo
Culinary Tours: Immerse yourself in a new culture through its cuisine. Cooking classes, food markets, and wine tastings are fantastic ways to connect with others who share your passion for food.
Volunteer Vacations: Combine travel with giving back. Many organizations offer opportunities to volunteer abroad, allowing you to make a difference while exploring a new place.
Yoga or Wellness Retreats: Nurture your mind, body, and soul on a solo wellness retreat. You'll meet like-minded people and return home feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
Adventure Travel: From hiking the Inca Trail to scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, adventure travel offers thrilling experiences and the chance to challenge yourself physically and mentally.
City Exploration: Wander through museums, parks, and historical sites at your own pace.
Solo Travel Safety Tips
Safety is paramount, especially when traveling alone. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:
Share Your Itinerary: Before you go, share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member.
Stay Connected: Invest in a local SIM card or international data plan to stay connected and easily access maps and information.
Trust Your Gut: If a situation feels uncomfortable or unsafe, remove yourself from it immediately.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings and avoid walking alone in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas, especially at night.
Keep Valuables Secure: Use a money belt or hidden pouch to protect your passport, credit cards, and cash.
Learn Basic Phrases: Knowing a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way in terms of safety and communication.

Unlock Budget Travel Secrets: How a Travel Agent Can Make Your Dream Trip a Reality
Dreaming of exploring the world but worried about the cost? You don't need to be wealthy to embark on incredible adventures. Budget travel is within reach, and a travel agent can be your secret weapon to maximizing your experience without breaking the bank.
Smart Budget Travel Tips
Book Flights Wisely: Utilize flight comparison tools like Google Flights and Skyscanner to compare fares across multiple airlines. Set price alerts using apps such as Hopper or Kayak to track prices and get notified when they drop. Flexibility is key; flying midweek (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and avoiding peak times can lead to significant savings.
Embrace Public Transportation: Taxis and rental cars can quickly deplete your travel budget1. Opt for public transportation like buses, subways, and trams to save money and efficiently navigate your destination. Google Maps is a great resource for planning your routes.
Eat Like a Local: Explore street food and small local eateries, which are often much cheaper than touristy restaurants. If your accommodation has kitchen facilities, buy groceries and cook some meals to further reduce food costs.
How a Travel Agent Elevates Budget Travel
Unlocking Exclusive Deals: Travel agents have access to promotions and deals from suppliers that aren't available to the general public. These discounts can significantly lower your overall trip cost.
Customized Itineraries: A travel agent can design a personalized itinerary that aligns with your budget and preferences. They can suggest alternative destinations that offer similar experiences at a lower cost.
Avoiding Hidden Fees: Hidden fees can inflate travel costs. Travel agents are adept at identifying and avoiding these fees, ensuring transparent pricing.
Saving Time and Reducing Stress: Planning a trip can be time-consuming and overwhelming. A travel agent streamlines the process with expert planning and insider knowledge.
Best Value vs. Cheapest: Understanding the Difference
It's crucial to distinguish between "cheapest" and "best value." The cheapest option might have hidden costs or compromises that diminish your experience. Best value, on the other hand, balances cost with quality, ensuring a memorable and fulfilling journey.
The Fora/Virtuoso Advantage: VIP Treatment at No Extra Cost
Fora is a modern, tech-forward travel agency and a member of Virtuoso, a high-end global hotel consortium. Fora Advisors can provide customized travel planning and expert advice. By booking with a Fora Advisor, you unlock a world of perks and upgrades at over 5,990 partners around the world, including VIP treatment, potential room upgrades, complimentary breakfasts, and hotel or resort credits.
The Ultimate Guide to All-Inclusive Resorts: Your Ticket to Hassle-Free Vacations
Hey there, fellow travel enthusiasts! As a seasoned travel agent, I've seen firsthand how all-inclusive resorts can turn a good vacation into an unforgettable experience. So, grab your virtual suitcase, and let's dive into the world of all-inclusive getaways!
What's the Deal with All-Inclusive Resorts?
All-inclusive resorts are like the Swiss Army knives of vacations. You pay one price, and boom! You've got your room, meals, drinks, and activities all wrapped up in a neat little package. No need to constantly reach for your wallet or worry about budgeting for meals. It's all taken care of!
Where Can I Find These Vacation Wonderlands?
All-inclusive resorts are sprinkled across the globe like confetti, but they're especially popular in:
Mexico (think Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Los Cabos)
The Caribbean (Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Bahamas)
Central America (Costa Rica and Belize)
But here's a little secret: You don't always need a passport to enjoy the all-inclusive life!
No Passport? No Problem!
For our U.S. citizens looking to keep things domestic, there are some fantastic all-inclusive options right in your backyard:
Puerto Rico: With its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, Puerto Rico offers several all-inclusive resorts. Plus, no passport required for U.S. citizens!
U.S. Virgin Islands: St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix are paradise found, with all-inclusive options to boot.
Hawaii: While not traditionally known for all-inclusives, some resorts in Hawaii offer all-inclusive packages.
Florida's All-Inclusive Gems
Florida has joined the all-inclusive game with some excellent options:
Bungalows Key Largo: This adults-only resort in the Florida Keys offers a luxurious all-inclusive experience with gourmet dining, premium drinks, and water activities.
Sandpiper Bay Resort: Located in Port St. Lucie, this family-friendly resort includes meals, drinks, and a wide range of sports activities11.
Little Palm Island Resort & Spa: For a high-end, secluded experience, this resort in the Florida Keys offers all-inclusive packages with exquisite dining and spa treatments.
JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort: While not fully all-inclusive, their Paradise by Sirene suites offer an adults-only experience with inclusive amenities.
TradeWinds Island Grand: This St. Pete Beach resort offers packages that include many resort activities, giving it an all-inclusive feel
The main difference? These domestic options often have a more American vibe and might not include alcohol in their packages. But hey, you can't beat the convenience!
Budget-Friendly vs. Luxe: Choose Your Adventure
Whether you're pinching pennies or ready to splurge, there's an all-inclusive for every budget:
Budget-Friendly Options:
Bahia Principe Grand Tulum: Great for families and wallet-friendly.
Royalton Bavaro Resort & Spa: Offers a 1,200-foot-long lazy river without breaking the bank.
Luxe Life:
Grand Velas Resorts: High-end all-inclusives with gourmet dining.

Secrets Resorts: Sophisticated atmosphere without the pitter-patter of little feet.

Got a discerning palate or dietary restrictions? No worries!
Michelin-Star Experiences: Some high-end resorts feature restaurants helmed by Michelin-starred chefs.
Plant-Forward Options: Many resorts now offer extensive vegetarian and vegan menus.
Gluten-Free and Allergy-Friendly: Resorts like Grand Velas and Dreams cater to various dietary needs.
Destination Weddings: Say "I Do" in Paradise
All-inclusive resorts are ideal for destination weddings:
Many resorts offer comprehensive wedding packages
Guest-friendly: Your guests can enjoy a vacation while celebrating your big day
Budget Control: Set prices make it easier to manage your wedding budget
Travel agents specializing in destination weddings, like Wedding Butlers, can be invaluable. They can:
Help you choose the perfect resort for your vision and budget
Coordinate all travel arrangements for your guests
Assist with wedding planning and paperwork
Provide a user-friendly wedding website for guest bookings
Offer expertise on legal requirements for getting married abroad
Group and Multi-Generational Travel: Something for Everyone
All-inclusive resorts excel at accommodating groups:
Varied activities for all ages
Multiple dining options
Flexible accommodation options
Travel agents are particularly helpful for group bookings. They can:
Negotiate group rates and perks
Coordinate travel for all group members
Arrange special accommodations or activities
Handle individual payments from group members
Provide a single point of contact for all travelers
Whether you're planning a family reunion, corporate retreat, or multi-generational vacation, a travel agent can streamline the process and ensure everyone's needs are met.
Common Questions About All-Inclusive Resorts
Is tipping included?
Usually, yes, but it's always nice to tip for exceptional service.
Are flights included?
Typically not, but some packages might include airfare.
What's not included?
Often, spa treatments, off-site excursions, and premium alcohol are extra.
Is it really "all" inclusive?
Most essentials are covered, but always check the fine print for specifics.
So there you have it, folks! Whether you're dreaming of a family beach vacation, a romantic getaway, or a stress-free group trip, all-inclusive resorts have got you covered. Ready to book your slice of paradise? Give your friendly neighborhood travel agent a call (that's me!), and let's make those vacation dreams a reality!
Discovering Hidden Gems: Your Guide to Travel Dupes
I've spent years helping people craft their dream vacations, and I've noticed a trend: everyone's heading to the same hotspots. While those places are popular for a reason, there's a whole world of equally stunning, less crowded (and less expensive!) destinations just waiting to be discovered. Think of them as "travel dupes" – amazing alternatives that give you a similar experience without breaking the bank or fighting through hordes of tourists.
Switzerland vs. Slovenia: Alpine Adventures for Less
Let's kick things off with a classic: Switzerland. Majestic mountains, charming villages – it's the stuff of fairy tales. But let's face it, Switzerland can be pretty pricey. That's where Slovenia comes in. Nestled in the heart of Europe, Slovenia boasts equally breathtaking Alpine landscapes, like the iconic Lake Bled. Picture this: you're standing on the shore, gazing at a picture-perfect island church, with snow-capped peaks in the distance. The best part? Slovenia is significantly more affordable, allowing you to stretch your travel budget further and enjoy more experiences. You can explore charming cities like Ljubljana, indulge in delicious local cuisine, and hike through stunning national parks, all without the Swiss price tag.
Maldives vs. Albania: Turquoise Waters on a Budget
Dreaming of overwater bungalows and crystal-clear turquoise waters? The Maldives might be the first place that comes to mind. But what if I told you that you could find similar paradise-like beaches in Albania, for a fraction of the cost? Albania's coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas is a hidden gem, offering pristine beaches, charming coastal towns, and a rich history to explore. Imagine yourself basking in the sun on the Albanian Riviera, swimming in the azure waters, and savoring fresh seafood, all while saving a bundle compared to a Maldives getaway.
Ibiza, Spain vs. Fethiye, Turkey: Mediterranean Charm Without the Crowds
If you're seeking vibrant nightlife and stunning beaches, Ibiza, Spain, is a popular choice. However, the Turkish Riviera in Fethiye offers a similar Mediterranean charm at a more affordable price. Fethiye boasts stunning beaches, a lively atmosphere, and historical sites like the Tomb of Amyntas. You can explore the famous Blue Lagoon, go paragliding over the turquoise waters, and immerse yourself in the local culture, all while enjoying a more relaxed and budget-friendly vacation than you would in Ibiza.
Dubai, UAE vs. Muscat, Oman: Arabian Nights on a Dime
For those seeking a taste of Arabian opulence, Dubai is often at the top of the list. But have you considered Muscat, Oman? This hidden gem offers a blend of traditional and modern experiences, with stunning mosques, bustling souks, and breathtaking coastal scenery. Wander through the Mutrah Souq, visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and explore the rugged Omani coastline, all at a more budget-friendly cost compared to Dubai. You'll experience the magic of Arabia without the extravagant price tag.
Tuscany vs. Umbria, Italy: An Authentic Italian Escape
Tuscany, with its rolling hills and world-renowned wines, is a perennial favorite. But its neighbor, Umbria, offers a quieter, more intimate Italian experience. Known as Italy's "Green Heart," Umbria boasts medieval towns, rolling countryside, and culinary treasures. Picture yourself exploring ancient hill towns, savoring delicious truffle dishes, and relaxing in a villa surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. Umbria provides an authentic Italian escape without the crowds or the high prices of Tuscany.
Santorini, Greece vs. Milos, Greece: Volcanic Views without the Crowds
Santorini, with its iconic caldera views, is a dream destination for many. But the island can get incredibly crowded and expensive, especially during peak season. Consider Milos. This gem in the Aegean offers similar volcanic landscapes, unique beaches, and a more authentic Greek experience. Imagine exploring the moonscape-like Sarakiniko beach or taking a boat trip to the Kleftiko Caves, a former pirate hideout. Milos provides the volcanic beauty you crave without the Santorini chaos and price tag.
Destination Wedding Dreams: Italy vs. All-Inclusive Mediterranean Vibes
Dreaming of a destination wedding in the rolling hills of Italy? Picture saying "I do" in a rustic villa surrounded by vineyards. While Italy is undeniably romantic, the costs can quickly add up. An all-inclusive resort with a Mediterranean vibe might be the perfect solution for a more budget-friendly celebration. Consider the Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos, with its unique Mediterranean vibe and all-inclusive packages. Or, check out the Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa, which offers affordable wedding packages with stunning Pacific Ocean views. You can still have that Mediterranean feel without the hefty price tag of an Italian wedding.

Navigating the High Seas: Why a Travel Agent is Your Best Port of Call for Cruise Bookings
Planning a cruise can feel like charting a course through a vast ocean of options. From choosing the right ship and itinerary to navigating cabin selections and shore excursions, the details can be overwhelming, especially for first-time cruisers14. That's where a knowledgeable travel agent comes in, acting as your personal navigator in the cruise-booking process1.
Your Cruise Travel Agent: More Than Just a Booking Engine
Think of a cruise travel agent as a concierge, travel expert, and advocate all rolled into one. We do more than just book your cruise; we guide you through every step, ensuring your vacation aligns perfectly with your preferences and budget.
Expert Guidance: With firsthand experience and in-depth knowledge of various cruise lines, ships, and destinations, we can offer personalized recommendations that you might not find on your own. Whether you're dreaming of a Caribbean getaway, an Alaskan adventure, or a Mediterranean escape, we can help you select the ideal cruise for your interests and travel style.
Navigating the Maze of Cruise Fares: Cruise fares can be complex, with hidden port charges, taxes, and fees that only appear later in the booking process1. We break down the costs, explain what's included in your fare (such as meals, entertainment, and activities), and help you understand the true value of different cruise options. The cheapest base fare isn't always the best deal, and we'll make sure you get the most bang for your buck.
Cabin and Dining Selection: Choosing the right cabin and dining time can significantly impact your cruise experience. We can help you avoid noisy or claustrophobic cabins and secure your preferred dining time, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable voyage.
Exclusive Perks and Deals: Cruise travel agents often have access to exclusive deals, group rates, and special promotions that aren't available to the general public. We're also among the first to know about sales and price drops, ensuring you get the best possible price on your cruise. Plus, we can often add extra perks like complimentary bottles of champagne or onboard credits to enhance your vacation.
As a certified expert with top certifications from Disney, Princess, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Viking, Carnival, and Celebrity, I have the knowledge and expertise to provide you with unparalleled guidance and value.
How Travel Agents Are Paid
You might wonder how travel agents get paid if their services are often free to you. Cruise lines typically pay agents a commission, meaning our expertise comes at no extra cost to you. The commission is usually a percentage of the overall price of the vacation package sold. This means you benefit from our knowledge and connections without paying extra.
What a Travel Agent Can and Can't Control
While we strive to make every aspect of your cruise perfect, some things are beyond our control. We can't influence weather conditions, guarantee specific cabin upgrades, or prevent unforeseen itinerary changes. However, we act as your advocate, communicating with the cruise line on your behalf to resolve any issues that may arise.
Securing Your Price with Courtesy Holds
One valuable tool we use is the courtesy hold. This allows us to reserve a cabin on a future cruise without requiring an immediate deposit5. Courtesy hold times can vary. This gives you time to make a final decision without the pressure of an immediate payment.
During the courtesy hold period, we can monitor for new promotions and discounts that could further reduce your cruise fare1. While we can't guarantee a price will never go up, we can lock in the current rate and explore opportunities to lower it even more before you commit.
Booking with Confidence
Booking a cruise should be an exciting and stress-free experience. By partnering with a knowledgeable travel agent, you can navigate the complexities of cruise planning with confidence, knowing you have an expert on your side every step of the way.

Try New Cuisines: Treat your taste buds to an adventure by sampling restaurants you've never tried before. It's like traveling the world through food, right in your own city.
Day Trips: The Mini-Vacation Solution
Sometimes, a change of scenery is all you need to feel refreshed. Consider these ideas for quick getaways:

Quirky Attractions: Look for unique local attractions. Whether it's a sculpture garden or a niche museum, these can be surprisingly fun day trips.
Making the Most of Your Local Adventure
To truly feel like you're on vacation, try these tips:
Unplug: Turn off work notifications and resist the urge to check emails.
Use Different Transportation: If you usually drive, try biking or walking. It's amazing how different your surroundings look at a slower pace.

Try Seasonal Activities: Participate in events unique to the current season, like outdoor concerts in summer or ice skating in winter.
Remember, approaching your surroundings with curiosity and openness is the key to feeling like you're on vacation. Whether exploring a new neighborhood or taking a day trip to a nearby town, there's always something new to discover.
By embracing local tourism, not only do you get to enjoy new experiences, but you also support your local economy. It's a win-win situation that leaves you feeling refreshed and connected to your community.

Striving for Excellence: A Travel Advisor's Journey of Continuous Learning
As a passionate travel advisor, I believe that knowledge is the key to creating exceptional experiences for my clients. While I can't physically visit every destination on Earth (especially with a toddler keeping me on my toes!), I'm constantly expanding my expertise through intensive training and certification programs.
Cruise Line Expertise
I'm proud to hold a Master’s Degree from NCL University; the highest certification offered by the Norwegian Cruise Line of Ph.D is just a few new bookings away (they don’t count bookings made before getting my Master’s towards the degree). This advanced certification allows me to provide insider knowledge about their ships and itineraries while securing excellent benefits for my clients. Similarly, my Commodore status with Princess Cruises represents countless hours of dedicated training and the highest level of expertise they offer.
As a Viking Certified Expert, I've completed their comprehensive four-module program, while my Gold Knot certification with Virgin Voyages represents their highest level of training. I've also achieved the prestigious Master of Adventure status with Royal Caribbean University and Diamond Graduate status in Carnival's Loyalty Rocks program.
Land-Based Certifications
My commitment to excellence extends beyond the seas. I'm a Diamond U-Preferred Agency member with Universal Studios, their highest elite tier, and a graduate of Disney's College of Knowledge. As an ALG Vacations Elite Diamond specialist and Certified Sandals Specialist, I can craft perfect all-inclusive experiences for my clients.
Technology and Resources
Being Expedia TAAP certified and a Centrav Air Specialist ensures I can access the best flight options and comprehensive travel inventory. My affiliations with Fora and Virtuoso provide exclusive access to luxury amenities and insider knowledge that I can pass on to my clients.
Continuous Growth
Despite juggling client bookings and toddler duties, I dedicate time each week to learn about one new destination and supplier. Whether it's a place I've visited personally or one I'm exploring through virtual training, this commitment ensures I stay current with industry trends and can offer firsthand or well-researched recommendations.
My Celebrity Cruises certification requires annual recertification to maintain the highest standards, which perfectly aligns with my philosophy of continuous learning. This dedication to ongoing education isn't just about collecting certificates – it's about ensuring every client receives the most current, comprehensive, and valuable travel guidance possible.
Travel isn't just my profession; it's my passion. Every certification I earn, every training I complete, and every destination I study adds another layer to the exceptional service I provide. While I may not have personally visited every corner of the world, my extensive network of resources and certifications ensures I can craft the perfect journey for each client's unique dreams and desires.

As a travel agent, I've helped countless adventurers plan their perfect Alaskan getaway. Whether you're dreaming of a luxurious cruise or an immersive land-based expedition, Alaska offers something for everyone.
Cruising the Alaskan Waters
Cruising is one of the most popular ways to experience Alaska's coastal beauty. Several cruise lines offer unique experiences:
1. Princess Cruises: Known for their comprehensive CruiseTours, Princess combines a 7-night cruise with a land tour, allowing you to explore both the coast and interior. Their exclusive rail service and wilderness lodges near national parks set them apart.
2. Holland America Line: With a long history in Alaska, Holland America offers a wide range of itineraries and their own lodges. Their ships feature museum-quality art and regional cooking demonstrations.
3. Norwegian Cruise Line: NCL stands out with their "Freestyle Cruising" concept, offering flexibility in dining and activities. They have ships custom-built for optimal wildlife viewing.
4. Royal Caribbean: Known for their family-friendly atmosphere, Royal Caribbean offers exciting shore excursions like dog sledding and glacier trekking.
5. Celebrity Cruises: Celebrity focuses on luxury and offers small-group land tours combined with their cruises, perfect for those seeking a more intimate experience.
Land-Based Adventures
For those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground, land tours offer an immersive Alaskan experience:
1. Denali National Park Explorer: Spend 7 days exploring the crown jewel of Alaska's wilderness. Hike through pristine forests, spot wildlife like grizzly bears and moose, and marvel at North America's tallest peak.
2. Kenai Fjords and Prince William Sound: This 10-day adventure combines glaciers, marine wildlife, and charming coastal towns. Kayak among icebergs, watch for whales, and explore the quaint town of Seward.
3. Alaska and Yukon Explorer: For those with more time, this 20-day journey takes you from Anchorage to Whitehorse, including highlights like Denali, Fairbanks, and Dawson City. Experience the midnight sun and learn about the Gold Rush era.
Travel Tips for Your Alaskan Adventure
1. Pack smart: Alaska's weather can be unpredictable. Bring layers, including a waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes[13].
2. Book early: Popular tours and accommodations fill up quickly, especially during peak season (June-August)[15].
3. Consider shoulder season: May and September offer lower prices and fewer crowds, with a chance to see the Northern Lights[13].
4. Plan for long days: In summer, you'll experience up to 19 hours of daylight. Bring an eye mask for better sleep[9].
5. Budget for excursions: Alaska's best experiences often come with a price tag. Plan for $100-$200 per person per day for activities[11].
6. Don't overlook Anchorage: It's a great base for day trips to glaciers, wildlife viewing, and outdoor adventures[32].
7. Be flexible: Weather can affect plans, especially for flightseeing tours. Have backup options ready.
Remember, whether you choose a cruise, land tour, or a combination of both, Alaska promises an unforgettable adventure. From calving glaciers to breaching whales, from gold panning to dog sledding, the Last Frontier is waiting to be explored. Start planning your Alaskan dream vacation today!

Solo to Disney
Next time, he’s using a travel agent
Disney World is frequently described as the most magical place on Earth. I can’t vouch for that, but it’s still a good vacation spot and is one of my favorite spots to go on vacation. I’ve been there as a solo traveler and while my experience may be somewhat atypical because of that, it still had plenty for me to do.
Perhaps the best thing to say about Disney World is the immersion factor. Once you enter the resort it’s very easy to forget the world outside. The only thing you will see once inside the resort is the resort itself and the roads connecting places. Everything is themed, and while there were advertisements for Disney-related things on the buses, you didn’t have a lot of reminders of things out of the Disney bubble. Once inside a park, the only thing outside the park to see is anything flying overhead. The theming is very well done for whatever section of the resort you are in. For example, on my last stay, I was in Animal Kingdom Lodge, and waking up to see the animals outside was surreal. Walking around Galaxy’s Edge can almost feel like being in a tourist trap in the Star Wars universe.
Another great thing about the resorts, the cast members are generally friendly and helpful. The first time I was there, I had no idea I was supposed to get reservations for the restaurants before I arrived, and one of the concierges managed to get me food at several different restaurants the first day I was there. On my most recent trip, I was there on my birthday, and while they were generally friendly enough to say, “Happy birthday” there were a few odd treats I got as a result. Nothing grandiose, but I few small tokens like a free dessert or having people in costume acknowledge the birthday in ways the characters likely would. Those small things made a great trip into a wonderful trip.
In most amusement parks I go to, I expect the food to be edible at best. Not so with Disney World. Many of the restaurants and snack places offer food that is quite frankly worth going to the parks and resorts just for the food. The best steaks I ever had were both from Disney World restaurants, specifically Space 220 and Teppan Edo. While I cannot personally vouch that the dining options from around the world are authentic for most places on the World Showcase at Epcot, I can vouch that the German food was suitably German. While the Micky Pretzels are good, the pretzels served in the Germany Pavillion are amazing and accurate to the Bavarian pretzels I had growing up.
As someone who loves going to amusement parks, I have to talk about the rides. If you are looking for max thrill rides, Disney has a few, but generally, I would look elsewhere for that. The rides are still entertaining, but most are not meant to give you adrenaline highs. Many of the rides are more about immersing you in the story of the ride than it is about giving you a great thrill. Tron’s Lightcycle Run is the biggest thrill ride at Disney’s Magic Kingdom the last time I went, and even then it spent quite a bit of time trying to immerse you into the ride rather than just simply feeding you through a queue for a thrill ride. Rise of the Resistance was more like a show on wheels. These are great rides, but don’t go in expecting the same thing Six Flags might offer.
If I have to gripe about anything it is the fact that I couldn’t book everything through the Disney World website. It used to be that you could book everything through Disney, pay Disney all at once or over time, and be done with it. However, that is no longer the case as Disney has moved several features onto other businesses that you used to get through one location. Which is why I wish I had booked through a travel agent on my last visit. I had to monitor everything from the flights that got changed multiple times, arranging transport to the parks, and so on. It just wasn’t worth it. So, I’d recommend getting a travel agent that can watch for deals and make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck and gives you the least amount of stress.
Traveling With Baby
Top 10 Travel Tips for Baby's Big Adventure
Pack like you're moving out
Let's face it, babies need a lot of stuff. Pack enough diapers, wipes, and clothes to survive a small apocalypse. Remember, a blowout always happens when you least expect it.
Snacks, snacks, and more snacks
Pack enough snacks to feed a small army. Your baby might decide airplane food isn't up to their gourmet standards. Though some airlines, like Air France, do offer infant or toddler meals specifically designed for tiny tastebuds.
The magic of white noise
Forget noise-canceling headphones. Planes are giant white noise machines. Your baby might sleep better than you do at home.
Diaper change strategy
Airplane bathrooms are tiny. Pack several wet bags with a diaper, wipes, and a change of clothes. It's like a diaper-changing mission impossible.
Dress for success (and messes)
You’re probably used to bringing a change of clothes or two for your tiny human but be sure to pack a spare top for yourself. Because nothing says "I'm a parent" like wearing your baby's lunch.
Gate-check that stroller
If you are bringing a stroller, keep your stroller until the last minute. It's like having a baby limo service in the airport. I baby wore, and they let me right through the metal detectors with no hassle at all.
Bring on the entertainment
Load up that tablet with baby's favorite shows. It's not screen time, it's "sanity preservation time". If screens aren’t your things, a simple cup and the cup holder can be a motor skill training and endless entertainment.
Timing is everything
Change that diaper right before boarding. Nothing says "fun flight" like a diaper change at 30,000 feet. And honestly, if it’s a long flight, opt for the overnights.
The ear-popping solution
Offer a bottle, pacifier, or snack during takeoff and landing. It's like a mini spa treatment for baby's ears.
Develop a thick skin
Some passengers might give you the stink eye just for existing with a baby. Remember, your little one has as much right to be there as anyone else. Plus, you'll never see these people again. But if you are lucky like I was on my little man’s international flights, people can be extremely helpful and friendly. Little man made friends with our row and flight attendants where they were practically begging to hold him.
Remember, no matter what happens, it's only temporary. Before you know it, you'll be at your destination, ready for new adventures (and probably a nap). Happy travels!
why live local travel far
It all begins with an idea.
I firmly believe everyone has a brand, whether you choose to make it into something or not. It’s what you are passionate about, what people think of when they think of you. All of our brands evolve, and some completely change. I developed “Live Local Travel Far” as an Instagram handle after selling my beloved “ten percent happier.” The idea at the time was my love of supporting local businesses, including the spa I owned, while still loving to travel. There was a period I mixed in my love of meditation, the metaphysical and the universal experience. When I was given the opportunity to work in travel, I knew this was where I was meant to go in my next chapter.
Living local is about truly experiencing where you live. It’s about going to the local coffee shop, a family-owned restaurant, or a small boutique. It’s about playing tourist in your own town, checking out a show, tour, or sporting event—whatever your neighborhood or city has to offer.
Traveling far is about getting outside your comfort zone. It’s hopping on a plane and immersing yourself in a new land and culture, whether you prefer to hang out on a beach, eat at every local cafe, or go on some wild, thrill-seeking adventure.
Whether you are looking for tickets to the latest comedy show, go on an excursion with a sherpa or are ready to put together a group cruise for a milestone, my passion is helping people put together experiences that will give them memories for a lifetime.
My Promise
Take them with you.
When I found out I was finally going to be a mom, I had a million things in mind for my son. Of course, I wanted him to be healthy and happy, but my one big wish was that he would have a life full of travel and adventures.
I was lucky enough to be raised in Europe by parents who took us everywhere. And I plan to follow in those footsteps.
My little man turned 9 months old on his first international flight, and 10 months right after coming home from a beach trip.
Having children may change the way you travel, but never let it stop you; they deserve to see the world, too. And even if they are too young to remember, their childhood is also your parenthood, and you’ll always remember.
